I try, but I fail at keeping my clothing organized. I have a fair amount of closet space and a lot of drawers, but every time I try redo my clothing, like after a big laundry day -- the organization deteriorates very quickly.

So, anyone have any advice on how to organize clothing? What categories do I use to determine where things go?

Business versus casual versus dressy/party/fun clothes?
Organize by color?
Organize by warmth level (like, heavy sweaters and shirts versus lighter shirts that need layers)?

See how lost I am?

I would just keep it simple: pants versus dresses/skirts versus blouses versus sweaters, and so on.

There's no "right or wrong" way to organize. Pick the way that instinctively seems right to you.

My clothing is organized by function (shirts, pants, skirts, dresses - sweaters are with the shirts) and then by color.

I also rotate some items out when the seasons change.

The system is fairly simple so that most of the time Houser can put away my stuff without asking where it goes. Also, I have t-shirts in a drawer to separate them from work clothes and jeans on a shelf to separate them from work pants.

i would do/have done the same. function, then color. rotating as the seasons change. anything casual that won't wrinkle so much goes in drawers: jeans/casual pants & shorts, printed t-shirts.

Oh ... and lastly, costumes are in a separate closet! (We keep costumes in the same closet because it's obvious which ones belong to whom)

Andy hates me sometimes.

Wait...you mean dirty clothes on the closet floor, clean stuff hung up, and clean socks/underwear shoved in random drawers isn't a good way to organize?

In a way, I'm kinda in the same boat as you are.

Small closet shared with Hubster: dresses, good shirts, anything needing to be hung up. Other small closet with out of season hanging stuff plus old Samsonites full of out of season folding stuff (jammies, t-shirts, pants). My only problem is the mound of sloppy work clothes (painting and the like)...have to stash those in drawers under our platform bed.

I wouldn't advise the color sorting thing, but would advise that you stick to a pretty limited palette except for accent pieces.

Just my 2 cents, toots.
