theories of home organization?

I try, but I fail at keeping my clothing organized. I have a fair amount of closet space and a lot of drawers, but every time I try redo my clothing, like after a big laundry day -- the organization deteriorates very quickly.
So, anyone have any advice on how to organize clothing? What categories do I use to determine where things go?
Business versus casual versus dressy/party/fun clothes?
Organize by color?
Organize by warmth level (like, heavy sweaters and shirts versus lighter shirts that need layers)?
See how lost I am?

The system is fairly simple so that most of the time Houser can put away my stuff without asking where it goes. Also, I have t-shirts in a drawer to separate them from work clothes and jeans on a shelf to separate them from work pants.

Date: 2009-02-18 01:57 pm (UTC)Small closet shared with Hubster: dresses, good shirts, anything needing to be hung up. Other small closet with out of season hanging stuff plus old Samsonites full of out of season folding stuff (jammies, t-shirts, pants). My only problem is the mound of sloppy work clothes (painting and the like)...have to stash those in drawers under our platform bed.
I wouldn't advise the color sorting thing, but would advise that you stick to a pretty limited palette except for accent pieces.
Just my 2 cents, toots.
